Een appeltaart maken (Make an apple pie)

September 29, 2018

Cooking is one of my favorite hobbies. I prepare meals almost every day, usually simple dinners like pasta, fried noodles, rice, or boiled potatoes with veggies. Since living on my own for the past 10 years, aside from work or studies, I constantly ask myself, "What should I eat today?" Over the years, my meal choices haven’t always been the healthiest—I often eat what I want rather than what I need. Some people eat because they need to, others because they want to, and I’m definitely more of the latter! Throughout this time, I’ve experimented with various dishes, from Indonesian and Thai cuisine to Japanese and even some random internet recipes.

Having my own kitchen has made it even more fun to experiment with new recipes, often inviting friends to taste my creations. I’ve cooked a range of appetizers and simple desserts, though I’ve always wanted to try baking cakes or pies, something I haven’t had the chance to do yet.

My mother in law loves to bake. She can make a lot of delicious cake, tart, or any other sweets. Here in The Netherlands, it is so easy to find a package for making sweets. Just like “Pondan” in Indonesia and maybe pancake mix in Japan. I’ve tried baking with these mixes before—brownies and martabak manis—but they didn’t turn out well, despite following the instructions. Maybe it was just bad luck!

So anyway, This summer, though, my mom and I made an apple pie together for some guests. She’s incredibly skilled at making sweets, not just apple pie but also Monchoutart and Kwaarktart, and everything she makes is always delicious!

The apple pie mix package. in Dutch we call it Appeltaart

So that was my first experience to make an apple pie. It was so easy tho. We just need 175g of margarine or butter, 1 egg, 1kg of apple, 75g of raisins, sugar and cinnamon powder. For the dough, it’s already in the apple pie mix, so I just had to put butter, egg and the apple pie mix in the mixer and mixed it until the dough is ready. After that, we put the dough as the base in the pan. Meanwhile, I prepared the apples, peeled and chopped it to the dice’s size. Then mixed it with raisins, sugar, and cinnamon powder. The next step was to put the apples into the pan. And cover it with the rest of the dough to make it more fancy and delicious proper apple pie haha.

"Decorate" The apple pie with the rest of the dough

Put the raw pie (is it the correct name?) into the oven for 30-45mins in 220 degrees  Celsius. Better to check the pie regularly, just in case it will get burn.

Apple pie is READY!

After a few minutes, woalaaa! My first ever apple pie! It was so lekker! It is all time favorite in this country. You can almost order it in every café here. Usually, apple pie is served with hot cocoa or just a simple black coffee.

So having a mom and living with the whole family is fun! I am so excited to make my next cake and maybe will share it on my blog. Tot ziens!

PS. Sorry, there’s no proper picture of the apple pie, 'cause we’re too excited to eat it. *wink*
